Microphones for Film
The microphone is where your sound is won or lost. Different mics "hear" the world in different shapes, and choosing the right one — and getting it close — matters more than almost anything else in your kit. Here's the small handful of mics that do the work of filmmaking, and how to pick.
The one concept that unlocks microphones is the polar pattern — the shape of what a mic listens to. Some mics hear in every direction equally; others hear mostly what's directly in front and reject the sides and rear. That "shape of hearing" is what makes a mic right or wrong for a given job. In filmmaking we mostly want mics that focus tightly on the actor and ignore the room, because rejecting unwanted sound is half the battle. With that idea in hand, the actual choices come down to a short, friendly list.
The three microphones that matter
You could spend a lifetime studying mics, but production dialogue is captured by essentially three types:
- The shotgun mic — your primary. Long and thin, highly directional: it hears a narrow cone in front and strongly rejects the sides. Mounted on a boom and pointed at the actor's mouth, it captures a full, natural voice while ignoring much of the room. This is the workhorse of film dialogue, especially outdoors and in larger spaces.
- The lavalier (lav) — the hidden clip mic. A tiny mic clipped or taped near the chest, usually hidden in clothing, often wireless. Because it's inches from the mouth it gets consistent level regardless of blocking, and it's invaluable for wide shots, movement, or when a boom can't get close. Its sound is a bit more "chesty" and it's prone to clothing rustle. Chapter 6 is all about these.
- The cardioid / hypercardioid — the indoor cousin. A less-tight directional pattern (heart-shaped pickup) that often sounds more natural than a shotgun in reflective interiors, where a very tight shotgun can pick up room echo bouncing off walls. Many recordists switch to a hypercardioid for tight indoor spaces.
Most professional dialogue is captured with a boomed shotgun (or indoor cardioid) as the main mic and lavs as backup or for coverage — belt and braces, so you always have a usable track. But owning the fanciest mic in the world won't save you if you ignore the golden rule below.
The golden rule: get the mic close
Here is the single most important sentence in microphone technique, more important than which mic you own: the closer the microphone is to the source, the better it sounds. Proximity is everything. A cheap mic held close to the actor's mouth will beat an expensive mic sitting far away, every time — because closeness gives you a strong, present voice and a good ratio of wanted voice to unwanted room noise. Distance is the enemy: the farther the mic, the thinner and more hollow the voice, the more room and noise creep in, and the more "amateur" it sounds. This is why the boom operator's whole art is getting that mic as close as physically possible to the actor while staying just out of frame (Chapter 5), and why lavs work so well (they're always close). If you remember one thing from this entire course, make it this: get the microphone close. It fixes more problems than any gear upgrade, and it's free.
The mic mounted on top of the camera is where good sound goes to die. It's far from the actor, so it captures a thin, roomy, distant voice full of whatever noise is between the camera and the subject. New filmmakers use it because it's convenient, then wonder why their dialogue sounds hollow and amateur. Get the mic off the camera and onto a boom (or a lav on the actor) so it can be close. The distance from camera to actor is exactly the distance ruining your sound. Close mic, good sound — it's almost that simple.
