Recorders, Levels & Signal

Once the mic hears the voice, the recorder captures it — and how you set the level makes the difference between clean, usable audio and a track that's either distorted or buried in hiss. This is the technical heart of the job, and it comes down to finding the sweet spot between too loud and too quiet.

The recorder is the box that turns your mic's signal into a file, and the one control you'll live and die by is gain — the knob that sets how much you amplify the incoming signal, i.e. the recording level. Setting gain correctly is the single most important technical skill in production sound, because it determines whether your dialogue lands in the usable "sweet spot" or falls into one of two ditches on either side. Understanding those two ditches is the whole chapter.

The two ways to ruin a recording

Every recording lives between two disasters, and your job is to sit comfortably between them:

  • Too loud → clipping (the top ditch). If the level is set too high, the loudest moments exceed what the recorder can hold and the waveform "clips" — a harsh, crackly digital distortion. This is unfixable. Clipped audio is destroyed permanently; no plugin brings it back. This is the disaster to fear most.
  • Too quiet → noise floor (the bottom ditch). If the level is set too low, the voice sits near the ever-present electronic hiss (the "noise floor"). When you raise it in post to a normal volume, you raise the hiss with it, so you get audible background noise. Not as fatal as clipping, but still amateur-sounding.
  • The sweet spot in between. You want dialogue peaking in a healthy middle range — comfortably above the hiss, with clear headroom below the clipping ceiling for a sudden loud line or laugh. On typical meters that's dialogue peaks landing around -12 dB, with the loudest moments never touching 0 dB.
  • Set to the loudest they'll get. Have the actors run their loudest lines in rehearsal and set your level so those peaks have headroom. If you set for quiet talking, the shout will clip.
  • Watch the meters and your ears. Set levels with the recorder's meters, but confirm with headphones — the meters tell you it's not clipping, your ears tell you it sounds good.

That's genuinely the core of it. Gain-staging — keeping the signal comfortably between the hiss and the ceiling — is what separates clean, professional tracks from distorted or noisy ones. Master this one skill and the technical side of sound is largely handled.

Why a dedicated recorder beats camera audio

You can plug a mic into your camera, and on the simplest run-and-gun shoot that's an option. But a dedicated field recorder is worth it, and here's why. Camera audio inputs are often noisier and give you less control over gain; a proper recorder has clean preamps, precise level controls for multiple mics, and better meters. Just as importantly, recording sound separately (called dual-system sound — camera records picture, recorder records audio) frees your sound person to work independently of the camera and gives you a high-quality dedicated audio file. The one catch of dual-system is that picture and sound are separate files that must be lined up in the edit — which is exactly what the clapperboard/slate is for: that "clap" gives editors a sharp spike in the audio and a closed-clapper frame in the picture to sync to (and modern software can auto-sync from it). It sounds like extra hassle, but it's the standard professional workflow because the audio quality and flexibility are so much better. Whichever route you choose, the level-setting principles above are identical: stay out of both ditches, and confirm with your ears.

The mistake I see most is setting levels off quiet rehearsal talk, then getting destroyed when the scene actually plays and the actor raises their voice — instant clipping, take ruined, unfixable. So I always set my gain to the loudest the scene will get: I ask for the big line or the laugh in rehearsal and set my headroom to that. It means the quiet moments sit a little lower, which is fine — I can lift quiet cleanly in post, but I can never un-clip a peak. Protect against the loud, forgive the quiet.
