The Sound Kit
Sound gear looks intimidating — a bag of black boxes, cables, and a furry thing on a pole. But a location sound kit is really just a short chain: a microphone catches the voice, a recorder captures it, and headphones let a human make sure it's good. Here's the whole kit in plain English, and who runs it.
Before we get into technique, let's demystify the gear and the job. The whole point of a sound kit is to move a voice from the air into a clean digital file — microphone to recorder, monitored by ears. Everything in the bag serves that chain. And just as important as the gear is the person running it, because the single biggest upgrade to your film's sound isn't a fancier mic — it's having one human being whose only job, all day, is sound.
The one hire that changes everything: a dedicated sound person
On real productions, sound is its own department with its own crew, and even on the smallest film you should copy that principle. The role is the production sound mixer (or recordist) — the person who chooses the mics, sets the levels, runs the recorder, and, crucially, listens on headphones to every take to catch problems the moment they happen. On bigger shoots they're supported by a boom operator who physically holds the boom pole and points the mic. The reason this matters: the director is watching the performance, the DP is watching the frame, and if nobody is dedicated to listening, the plane flying overhead or the buzzing fridge or the actor turning away from the mic goes unnoticed until the edit — when it's too late. One person, headphones on, whose entire job is the sound, is the highest-value thing you can add to your audio. Don't make the camera operator "also handle sound." Give it a person.
A plain-English tour of the kit
Here's the location sound kit, box by box, and what each does:
- Microphone(s). The part that hears the voice — usually a shotgun mic on a boom and/or lavalier mics on the actors. This is the heart of everything, and the next chapter is all about them.
- The recorder (or mixer/recorder). The device that captures the mic signal to a file, with knobs to set the level for each mic. On the simplest setups this can be the camera, but a dedicated recorder is far better (Chapter 4).
- The boom pole. A lightweight extendable pole that holds the shotgun mic out over the actors, just above frame, so the mic can be close without being seen.
- The windshield. The foam cover or fuzzy "dead cat" that slips over a mic to kill wind noise outdoors — essential, not optional, for any exterior.
- Headphones. Closed-back headphones so the recordist hears exactly what's being captured. You cannot judge sound by looking at it; you have to listen. Non-negotiable.
- Cables, batteries, and a bag. XLR cables to connect it all, spare batteries (audio gear eats them), and a sound bag to carry the rig — the unglamorous stuff that saves the day.
That's genuinely the whole kit. It's a small, learnable set of tools, and you don't need the expensive versions to get great results (Chapter 10 is all about doing this cheaply). What you need is to understand what each piece is for, keep the chain simple and reliable, and — above all — have someone whose ears are on it every take. The most common indie sound disaster isn't bad gear — it's nobody listening. The camera person is framing, the director is watching the actors, and the mic is just sitting there recording whatever, including the air conditioner nobody turned off. On even my smallest shoots I assign one person to wear the headphones and own the sound, and I tell them they're allowed to stop a take for audio, same as anyone can stop for safety. That single role change fixes more sound problems than any equipment upgrade, because now someone actually hears the problem while it can still be fixed.
