Grip, Rigging & Heights
Grip work is the physics department of a film set — heavy things held up in the air over people's heads. Most of it is simple, and all of it is safe if you follow one principle: assume everything wants to fall, and rig so it can't. Here's how to keep gear up and crew unhurt.
Grips exist to shape light and support the camera, and a huge part of that job is holding heavy objects steady — lights on tall stands, flags and overheads, camera on a jib. The failure mode is obvious and ugly: something up high comes down on someone below. The entire discipline of rigging safety is built around a single, slightly paranoid assumption that serves you well: everything wants to fall, so rig it as if it will try.
Keep it standing: the everyday rules
Most grip safety is unglamorous habit, repeated until it's automatic. Get these right and the common accidents — a toppled light stand, a dropped flag, a stand walking off in the wind — simply stop happening:
- Sandbag every stand. Any stand holding weight or height gets sandbags on the legs — more weight up high means more bags down low. This is the number-one grip habit.
- Widest leg toward the weight. Point a stand's tallest/widest leg under the direction of the load (the boom arm, the heavy head) so it can't tip that way.
- Safety the overheads. Anything rigged above people gets a secondary safety — a cable or chain that catches it if the primary mount fails. No single point of failure over a person's head.
- Cap and cover. Put tennis balls or caps on stand spikes at eye level; a stand top at head height is an eye injury waiting to happen.
- Mind the wind outdoors. Wind turns a flag or overhead into a sail. Reduce the surface, add weight, and strike it before a gust does.
Working at height
The other half of grip safety is people going up, not just gear. Ladders and platforms are where serious injuries happen because a fall from even modest height can be catastrophic. The rules are simple and non-negotiable: use the right ladder for the job, fully opened and on stable ground, and never stand on the top step or over-reach — move the ladder instead. Have someone foot the ladder (hold it steady) when anyone's up it. For anything beyond a standard ladder — scaffolding, a scissor lift, rigging into a ceiling, or work where a fall would be a long way down — you're into territory that needs proper fall protection and, often, a qualified rigger. Hanging a heavy light from a real structural point is not a "figure it out" job; if the point fails, the light lands on the cast. When the height or the load gets serious, that's the Chapter 4 call again: bring in the person who rigs for a living, or find a way to get the shot from the ground.
The sandbag is the most ignored piece of safety gear on a low-budget set, because bags are heavy, boring, and always somewhere else. So people "just this once" put a big light on a tall stand with no bags, on a set full of moving people. That's the shot where someone's elbow catches a leg and a fixture comes down. Make it a rule that no weighted stand goes up without bags, full stop — and keep the bags near the stands, not in a corner, so there's no excuse.
