Electrical & Power Safety

Lighting is where most sets get their power hungry — and electricity is the most common serious hazard on a film set. You don't need to be an electrician, but you do need to respect load, keep cable safe, and know the one rule about water. Here's the working knowledge that keeps a set from tripping breakers or worse.

Ask any experienced gaffer what hurts people on low-budget sets and electricity is near the top of the list — not because it's exotic, but because it's everywhere and easy to take for granted. You're pulling far more power than a house is designed for, running cable across floors people walk on, and often working in old buildings with unknown wiring. The good news: the fundamentals are learnable, and getting them right removes most of the danger.

Respect the load

The core concept is load — how much power your lights draw versus how much a circuit can safely deliver. Every household circuit has a limit (a breaker rated for a certain amperage), and if you plug in more lights than it can handle, best case the breaker trips and you lose the shot; worst case, on a faulty or overridden circuit, wiring overheats and starts a fire. You don't need to be an electrician to work safely, but you do need to respect a few basics:

  • Know your circuits. Don't just find outlets — find out which outlets share a breaker and what that breaker is rated for. Several wall sockets are often on one circuit.
  • Do the math before you plug in. Add up the wattage of the lights on a circuit and stay well under its limit. When in doubt, spread the load across more circuits.
  • Never defeat a breaker. If a breaker keeps tripping, that's the safety system doing its job — reduce the load, don't bypass it. A "fixed" breaker is a fire waiting to happen.
  • Use proper cable, fully unspooled. Rated extension/stingers, not thin household cords, and unspool them fully — coiled cable under load builds heat.
  • Protect the run. Tape down or mat cable across walkways, and keep connections up off wet ground.

The rule about water — and when to call a pro

Here is the one non-negotiable: electricity and water do not mix. Any time you're shooting near rain, a pool, a beach, a kitchen, a bathroom, or wet ground, the stakes jump from "might trip a breaker" to "might kill someone." Keep all connections elevated and dry, use GFCI protection (the outlet or breaker that cuts power the instant it detects a fault), and if you can't guarantee a dry, protected setup, don't run mains power there — switch to battery-powered fixtures instead. This is also the moment to be honest about the limits of your crew. Tapping into a building's main electrical panel, running a generator, or any high-amperage distribution is licensed electrician territory, not something to figure out from a video. A qualified genny operator or set electrician for the day is far cheaper than an electrical fire or an electrocution, and it's exactly the "bring in the specialist" call from Chapter 4.

You don't need to be an electrician — but you do need to respect load, protect your cable runs, and never, ever get mains power near water.

Most electrical accidents on small sets aren't dramatic equipment failures. They're mundane: an overloaded circuit in an old house, a coiled cable overheating, a connector sitting in a puddle, someone tripping on an untaped run. Handle those unglamorous basics and you've addressed the vast majority of the real risk.

Before I light a location I do a quick "circuit walk" with whoever's gaffing: we find the breaker panel, figure out which sockets are on which breakers, and label them. It takes ten minutes and it prevents the classic indie disaster — three lights on one bedroom circuit, the breaker pops mid-take, and now you're shooting in the dark hunting for a fuse box you never located. Knowing your power before you need it is the whole game.
