Arthouse & Prestige
Curated streaming platforms for festival-caliber and critically recognized cinema. Highly selective — distributor relationships are typically required. Getting on these platforms signals credibility.
MUBI
One of the most prestigious arthouse streaming services in the world. MUBI curates a rotating library of 30 films at a time, each available for 30 days. Selection is by invitation or through distribution partners. Strong Kino Lorber and arthouse distributor relationships. Highly selective — but being on MUBI is a major credibility marker.
Criterion Channel
The streaming arm of the Criterion Collection — the most prestigious name in film curation. Criterion Channel focuses on classic, world, and arthouse cinema. Getting placed here requires either a Criterion release deal or distribution through their key partners. An invitation to this platform is rare and significant for any indie filmmaker.
Fandor
Fandor is a subscription service dedicated to independent, international, and documentary cinema. Unlike MUBI or Criterion Channel, Fandor accepts a broader range of indie submissions — making it more accessible to filmmakers without major festival credentials. Strong for world cinema, personal filmmaking, and documentary-adjacent narratives.
Sundance Now
Sundance Now (an AMC Networks property) streams independent films including Sundance selections and arthouse titles. Premium subscription service with a curated audience of indie film enthusiasts. Access requires either an AMC Networks deal or distribution through their licensed content partners. Strong brand association with the Sundance Film Festival ethos.
BFI Player
The British Film Institute's streaming platform, offering classic British cinema, world cinema, and festival selections. Primarily UK-facing but accessible globally. Access for international indie filmmakers typically comes through UK or international distributors with BFI relationships. Strong with documentary, arthouse, and significant world cinema titles.
Kanopy
Kanopy is a free streaming platform available through public libraries and universities. Content is licensed and funded through library subscriptions. Particularly strong for documentaries, educational content, and arthouse films. Giant Pictures and First Run Features have established Kanopy pipelines. Great for reaching academic audiences and long-tail content discovery.
