Motion Tracking & Match Moving

The moment your camera moves, a pasted-on effect will slide around and give itself away — unless you track the motion and lock the effect to it. This chapter demystifies the three kinds of tracking you'll actually use, and how to shoot so the software can do its job.

A locked-off tripod shot is the easy case — your effect stays put and so does the frame. But the moment the camera moves, everything changes: pan the camera and a screen replacement or a set extension that's just "sitting there" will visibly slide and float, instantly betraying the effect. The fix is tracking — analyzing the camera's motion in the shot so you can apply that exact same motion to your added element, locking it to the scene as if it were really there. This is the skill that lets you use effects in living, moving shots instead of only static ones, and it sounds far more intimidating than it is. The software does the math; your job is mostly to understand which kind of track a shot needs and to shoot so the tracker has something to grab onto.

The three tracks you'll actually use

Ninety percent of budget VFX needs one of these:

  • Point / two-point tracking. The tracker follows one or a few high-contrast points to attach a 2D element — pinning a bullet-hole to a wall, sticking a label to a jar. Fast and reliable for simple attach jobs.
  • Planar tracking. Tracks a flat surface (a phone screen, a monitor, a billboard, a wall) as it moves and skews, so you can replace what's on it. This is the workhorse for screen replacements — Mocha and Fusion's planar tracker are gold here.
  • 3D camera tracking. The big one: the software solves the camera's full 3D movement through space, giving you a virtual camera you can place 3D objects or set extensions into. Fusion, After Effects, and Blender all do this, and it's how you drop a CG element into a moving handheld shot.
  • Stabilization is not tracking. Worth noting: stabilizing removes motion; tracking measures it to reuse. Don't confuse the two — for effects you almost always want to track, not stabilize.

Shoot so the tracker can work

Here's where on-set discipline pays off again, because a tracker is only as good as the footage you feed it. A clean, sharp, well-lit shot with plenty of texture and detail tracks almost by itself; a soft, dark, motion-blurred, featureless shot fights you every step. So when you know a shot needs tracking, shoot for it: keep the image sharp (motion blur from a slow shutter is a tracker's enemy — a slightly faster shutter gives cleaner frames to lock onto), give the scene texture and contrast (a blank white wall has nothing to track; add markers if you must), and move the camera smoothly rather than in whip-fast jerks. For screen replacements and set extensions, those little corner markers from Chapter 3 are exactly what the planar and 3D trackers latch onto — place them, track them, then paint them out. And be realistic about difficulty: a locked or gently panning shot is trivial; a fast handheld run-and-gun through a dark, blurry space is genuinely hard even for pros, so if you have the choice, design your effect shots to move gently. When a track does slip, the fix is usually manual — nudging keyframes by hand where the automatic track drifts — and that patient cleanup is normal, not a sign you did something wrong. Tracking is one of those skills that feels like black magic until you've done it a handful of times, and then it becomes routine: identify the type of track, feed it good footage, let it solve, clean up the drift, and attach your element. A tracker is only as good as the footage you feed it. Sharp, textured, smoothly-moving shots track themselves; soft, blurry, featureless ones fight you. Shoot for the track and post becomes easy.

I had a shot where a character's phone needed a custom screen, camera drifting handheld the whole time. My first attempt — no markers, softish focus — the replacement screen swam around like it was underwater, and I spent hours hand-keyframing it and it still wasn't right. Reshoot: four tiny tape markers at the phone's corners, a touch faster shutter to kill the blur, and a steadier hold. The planar track locked instantly, I painted out the markers, and the screen was welded to the phone. Same shot, same software. Tracking rewards the footage you give it more than the hours you throw at it afterward.
