The fall that looks fatal, the bullet hit that spurts blood — these impact effects are some of action's most visceral moments, and among the most tightly engineered. Understanding how high falls and squibs really work shows you both why they're professional-only and how much of their power comes from clever, safe technique rather than real danger.

A stunt performer who appears to plummet to their death actually lands on a hidden air bag or pad calibrated for exactly that fall. A character who takes a bullet and sprays blood is wearing a rigged squib fired by a licensed technician, with no real projectile anywhere. In both cases, the visceral, dangerous-looking result is produced by careful rigging and skilled performers, not by anyone actually being hurt. Understanding these effects tells you what's involved in hiring them — and, importantly, how much of their impact you can achieve on a budget through implication and simpler safe tricks.
How falls and squibs really work
The engineering behind the impact:
- High falls land on air bags or pads. A performer falling from height lands on a calibrated air bag, decelerator rig, or stacked pads engineered for that specific fall, positioned and tested by professionals. The height is real; the landing is controlled.
- Falls use technique. Trained performers know how to fall — how to distribute impact, roll, and hit safely — even for lower falls. It's a learned skill, not just soft padding.
- Squibs are rigged, not shot. A "bullet hit" is a small charge (a squib) with a blood pack, mounted on the performer under wardrobe and fired remotely by a licensed effects tech. Nothing is fired at anyone — the effect comes from the person, not a projectile.
- Blood is a controlled effect. Fake blood, blood packs, and rigs create the gore, applied and triggered safely. Filming with blood is a messy craft, but not a dangerous one, when handled properly.
- Everything is calibrated and tested. Fall heights, pad placement, charge sizes — all calculated and rehearsed. The professionalism is in the precise engineering that removes the risk.
- The camera and cut do a lot. A fall filmed to hide the pad and cut at the right moment, a squib timed to a gunshot sound — the effect is completed by how it's shot and edited, not just the physical rig.
What you can do safely on a budget
Here's the practical translation for the filmmaker without a stunt-effects budget: you don't need to perform the real dangerous version to get the effect, because so much of a fall's or a hit's power lives in implication, camera, and cutting — which are free and safe. Take a fall: you almost never need to show a real high fall to convince an audience someone fell. You can show the person at the edge, cut to their face reacting, cut to a POV looking down, cut to the ground far below, add a scream and a fading sound — and the audience's imagination completes a fatal fall you never staged. Or you shoot a very low, safe fall (onto hidden padding just out of frame) tight and cut it to imply a much bigger one. For a "bullet hit," you can cut on the gunshot to a reaction, use the character clutching a pre-applied blood patch, or reveal the wound after the fact — implying the hit rather than firing a squib. The principle from the fight and chase chapters holds here too: imply, cut, and let sound and reaction carry the effect, and you can create brutal-looking impacts with essentially no risk and no budget. Where the "never DIY" line stays absolute: no real falls from any height, no real squibs or charges, no anything with genuine impact or pyrotechnic risk — those are professional-only, full stop, and if your film truly needs a real high fall or real squibs, you hire the coordinator and effects technicians with the proper rigs, or you redesign the moment to the implied version. There's no amateur middle ground on real impact effects, just as there wasn't on cars. But the empowering truth is that the implied version is often more effective anyway — a fall you feel but don't fully see, a death implied rather than shown, frequently hits harder than a fully visible stunt, because the audience's imagination is more powerful than any effect. So think, once again, like an illusionist working with the least real risk for the most apparent impact: what can I imply, cut around, and let sound and reaction sell?
