Pre-Flight Planning & Safety
Most drone disasters aren't flying mistakes — they're planning mistakes that a two-minute check would have caught. Real pilots run a pre-flight routine every single time, and so should you. Here's how to plan an aerial shoot so the only surprises are good ones, and the checklist that stands between you and a fly-away, a crash, or a very bad day.
Pilots — the real kind, in real cockpits — run a checklist before every flight, no matter how experienced they are, because they know that memory fails and complacency kills. Drone flying deserves the same discipline, and the good news is that a drone pre-flight takes minutes, not an hour. The aerial shots that go wrong almost never go wrong because the pilot couldn't fly; they go wrong because nobody checked the wind, or the battery was lower than it looked, or there was a power line the pilot didn't clock until the drone was already near it. Planning is where safety lives. Fly the plan, and the flying itself becomes calm and boring — which, when there's an expensive aircraft in the sky over other people, is exactly what you want.
Plan before you leave, check when you arrive
Split your prep into what you do at the desk and what you do on site:
- Check the airspace (desk + site). Confirm you can legally fly at that exact location and get any authorization you need in advance. Re-check on the day in case anything's changed.
- Read the weather (desk + site). Wind is the big one — drones have limits, and gusts near the ground are worse than forecasts suggest. Rain, cold, and fog all degrade performance. If it's marginal, don't fly.
- Scout for hazards (site). Walk the location and look up: power lines, trees, cables, buildings, antennas. These are the things drones hit. Know where they are before you launch.
- Pick your take-off/landing zone (site). A clear, level, uncluttered spot away from people, with an obvious open approach for landing. Never take off from your hand near a crowd if you can avoid it.
- Check batteries and firmware (desk). Fully charge every pack, and update firmware at home, never in the field — a mid-shoot forced update has ruined many a shoot day.
- Set your fail-safes (desk). Configure Return-to-Home height above the tallest local obstacle, know your low-battery behavior, and confirm home point sets correctly before you fly.
The wind, the battery, and the people
If you internalize only three safety instincts from this chapter, make them these. First, respect the wind: it's the number-one cause of lost and crashed drones, it's stronger up high than at your feet, and a drone fighting a headwind on the way out will drain its battery alarmingly fast fighting back home. When the wind is near your drone's limit, the professional move is to not fly — there's no shot worth a fly-away. Second, respect the battery: never fly a pack to empty, always land with a real reserve, and remember that cold weather and headwinds eat charge faster than the percentage readout implies. Bring the drone home early rather than gambling on the last few percent, because a drone that runs out of power doesn't glide — it falls. Third, and most important of all, respect the people: your single non-negotiable duty as a drone operator is never to put an uninvolved person at risk. Don't fly over crowds, keep clear of anyone who isn't part of the production and briefed, and always have an escape path in mind so that if something goes wrong, the drone comes down over empty ground, not over heads. A crashed drone is an insurance claim; a drone that injures someone is a catastrophe. Everything else in pre-flight — the checklist, the scouting, the fail-safes — exists to serve that one priority. Plan the shoot so that the worst realistic outcome is a lost aircraft over an empty field, keep the wind and battery honest, and treat every flight with the same short, humble routine whether it's your first or your five-hundredth. That discipline is what makes you a pilot rather than a person with a drone.
I have a fixed pre-flight I say out loud like a ritual: airspace clear, wind under limit, batteries full, home point set, return height above the trees, take-off zone clear, nobody downrange. It takes ninety seconds and I do it every single time, because the one time I got cocky and skipped the wind check, I watched my drone struggle home on fumes against a gust I hadn't respected — it landed with two percent and my heart in my throat. Now the routine is non-negotiable. Boring pre-flights make for boring flights, and boring is exactly what you want when there's an aircraft over people.
