Camera Settings for Aerial
The camera on a drone follows the same rules as any cinema camera — with one aerial-specific twist that trips up nearly everyone: you almost always need ND filters. Get the frame rate, shutter, filters, and log profile right, and your aerials will match the rest of your film instead of looking like sharp, over-crisp drone clips. Here's the settings recipe.
If you've read the Mobile Filmmaking or Camera & Lighting courses, the foundations here will feel familiar, because a drone camera obeys the same physics as any other. You want 24fps for that cinematic motion cadence, a shutter around double your frame rate (roughly 1/48–1/50) for natural motion blur, and a flat or log profile so you capture maximum detail to grade later. Those principles don't change just because the camera is in the air. What does change is one practical problem that's far more acute up there than on the ground — and it's the single most common reason drone footage looks subtly wrong. That problem is light, and the fix is a filter.
The settings recipe — and the ND problem
Here's the aerial-specific checklist:
- Shoot 24fps. For a filmic cadence that matches your ground footage. Only go to a high frame rate when you specifically want to slow a shot down in post.
- Shutter ≈ 1/48–1/50. Double the frame rate, for natural motion blur. Without it, moving aerial footage looks stuttery and "gamey."
- Use ND filters — this is the big one. You fly outdoors in bright sky. To keep a 1/48 shutter without massively overexposing, you need a neutral-density filter to cut the light. No ND, and you're forced into a fast shutter that ruins your motion blur. ND filters are not optional for cinematic aerials.
- Shoot log/flat if available. Capture a gradeable image with preserved highlight and shadow detail — the sky and landscape have huge dynamic range, and log helps you hold both.
- Lock exposure. Don't let auto-exposure pulse as you fly across bright sky and dark ground. Set it and lock it so a moving shot stays consistent.
- Dial back sharpness. Drone cameras often over-sharpen, giving that crunchy "video" look. Turning sharpening down in-camera makes aerials blend with your other footage.
Why the ND filter matters so much
Let me dwell on the ND filter, because it's the thing that separates aerials that cut seamlessly into a film from ones that stick out as obvious drone clips. The 180-degree shutter rule says that at 24fps you want roughly a 1/48 shutter, and that shutter speed is what gives motion its natural, slightly-soft blur — the look your eye reads as cinematic. But here's the bind: outdoors under a bright sky, a 1/48 shutter lets in far too much light, and the image blows out. On a ground camera you'd close the aperture, but most drone cameras have a fixed aperture, so you can't. That leaves you two choices. The wrong one, which the camera will do automatically if you let it, is to crank the shutter super fast (1/1000, 1/2000) to cut the light — and a fast shutter kills the motion blur, giving that harsh, stuttery, hyper-crisp look that screams "drone." The right one is to put an ND filter — essentially sunglasses for the lens — in front of the camera to physically cut the incoming light, so you can keep your nice 1/48 shutter and a correct exposure. That's the whole reason ND filters are considered essential aerial gear rather than a nice-to-have. Carry a small set of different strengths (you'll swap them as the light changes through the day), fit the right one so you can hold that cinematic shutter, and your aerials will suddenly have the same buttery motion as the rest of your film. Skip the ND and no amount of grading fixes the stuttery, over-sharp result. Everything else on the settings list matters, but the ND filter is the one aerial-specific thing that most reliably turns amateur-looking drone footage into footage that belongs in a movie.
The fastest way I can tell whether someone shot their aerials with ND filters is the motion — with ND, moving shots have that smooth, blurred glide; without it, they stutter and crawl with over-crisp edges. I keep a little wallet of ND filters clipped to my drone case and treat swapping them as part of the pre-flight, same as checking the battery. It's a two-second habit that does more for how cinematic my aerials look than anything else in the camera menu. If you buy one accessory for your drone beyond spare batteries, make it a set of NDs.
