Exposure: ISO, Aperture & Shutter
Exposure is simply how bright or dark your image is — and it's controlled by three settings that trade off against each other: ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. Once you understand how the "exposure triangle" balances, you stop fighting your camera and start commanding it.
Auto mode is where images go to look amateur. The camera's automatic exposure guesses at an "average" brightness, which flattens your careful lighting and shifts unpredictably mid-shot. Taking manual control of exposure is the first real step from pointing a camera to operating one — and it's genuinely not hard once the three controls click into place. Think of exposure as a bucket you're filling with light: too little and the image is dark and muddy (underexposed), too much and it's blown out and detail-less (overexposed). Three taps control the flow, and each one costs you something elsewhere. That trade-off is the whole game.
The three controls — and what each costs
ISO, aperture, and shutter each change brightness, but each also has a side effect on the look of the image. Understanding the side effect is what lets you choose the right one to adjust:
- Aperture (f-stop) — the pupil. How wide the lens opens. A wide aperture (low f-number, e.g. f/2) lets in lots of light and gives a shallow, blurry-background look; a narrow aperture (f/11) is darker but keeps more in focus. Its side effect is depth of field (Chapter 9).
- Shutter speed — the blinds. How long each frame is exposed. Slower lets in more light but adds motion blur; faster is darker and crisper, even strobey. For film, this one is mostly locked — see below.
- ISO — the amplifier. How much the sensor boosts the signal. Higher ISO brightens a dark image but adds grain/noise; lower ISO is cleanest. Keep it as low as your light allows.
- They balance. Open the aperture and you can lower the ISO; you're always trading one for another to hit correct brightness with the look you want.
- Read the image, not just the meter. Use tools like the histogram and zebras to judge exposure precisely rather than trusting the camera's auto guess.
The shutter rule that makes motion look like film
Here's the one specific rule worth memorizing, because it separates footage that looks "video-ish" from footage that looks cinematic: the 180-degree shutter rule. Set your shutter speed to roughly double your frame rate. Shooting at 24 frames per second? Set shutter to 1/48 (or the nearest option, 1/50). At 30fps, use 1/60. This produces the natural amount of motion blur our eyes associate with cinema. Too fast a shutter makes movement look unnaturally sharp and juddery (the "Saving Private Ryan" battle look — great as a deliberate choice, jarring by accident); too slow makes it smeary. Because you're keeping shutter locked to your frame rate for that cinematic motion, in practice you usually leave shutter alone and balance exposure with aperture, ISO, and the amount of light you add — which is exactly why lighting (the rest of this course) and exposure are two halves of one skill. And when there's too much light for a wide aperture at your locked shutter and low ISO — bright daylight, say — the professional tool is an ND filter, essentially sunglasses for your lens, which cuts light without touching any of the three settings. Master this balance and you'll always get a clean, correctly exposed, cinematic image, on any camera.
My working order on set is: lock shutter to my frame rate (1/48 at 24fps) and forget it; set ISO to the camera's cleanest native value; then set exposure with aperture and, most of all, with light — adding or cutting it until the image looks right at the aperture I want for the shot. If it's too bright outside for that, I reach for an ND filter, not a faster shutter. Getting exposure from light rather than from cranking settings is the habit that keeps footage clean and cinematic instead of grainy or strobey.
